The name "Teddy Bear" traces back to a hunting trip in Mississippi in November 1902. President Roosevelt, an avid hunter, was unable to find a bear, so his guides cornered an old black bear and tied it to a willow tree for him to shoot. Roosevelt refused, declaring it "unsportsmanlike" to shoot a captive animal.
